A Nail and a Cross

A Nail and a Cross
-by Brian Quinn

an old man

steps out of
the past(he
pulls a nail
out of his
pocket)
his eyes
closed to the
cycling tides.

he
reaches his arms
toward the sky
and a shadow(now
alien, now distended,
now dark)
sprouts wings, whispers
something like
freedom.

the old
man drives the
nail into the
sand, trying(to
tear away,
trying)
to leave behind
the shadow now
pinned to the
earth.
